The mating procedure in the closer sense begins, when both intertwined slugs start to push out the copulative organs (penes). Like in other snails and slugs, leopard slugs' genital opening is right behind the head. The copulative organs are pushed outside by blood pressure and retracted by muscle power.

Leopard slugs are hermaphrodites, which means the copulation takes place simultaneously and reciprocally.
